What Makes Us Happy?

Given today's challenging economic environment, many people would most likely say that they are not very happy. What makes us happy and how can we become happier if we are not presently content with our lives?  More importantly, how can we coach children in being more resilient and, in turn, enable them to feel happy?
 
What Makes Us Happy from NPR discusses an essay of the same name by journalist Joshua Wolf Shenk, and a book by psychology professor Todd Kashdan entitled Curious:  Discover the Missing Ingredient to a Fulfilling Life.  While the story and both works are interesting, what struck me even more were the comments about personal happiness posted by many listeners.
