The Geek Epiphany

We raise our children, and try to guide them down a path.  Then light dawns on Marblehead. They already had it all figured out.

Missing the Theme

I was sitting on the sofa, suffering through shingles.  I finished the NY Times crossword puzzle, read some of Patricia O'Connor's The Origin of the Specious, watched an episode of Judge Pirro.  Looking for further distraction, I fired up the first season of The West Wing.  As the pilot started, with that impossibly beautiful song playing over the opening credits, it struck me:  where have all the theme songs gone?

Pushin' Too Hard? (with apologies to the Seeds)

Every Sunday, Democrat and Chronicle music maven Jeff Spevak posts an entry to his blog called "I read the New York Times so you don't have to," highlighting some stories of interest.  This week, he discussed 2 obituaries.  One has haunted me.

Looking for a new carol

The order forms offering music for the year-end festivities begin crossing my desk in September.  All lovely, pretty stuff.  All pretty much the same as last year.  And then we have a banner year, and newly minted magic fills the airwaves.  So here's a short list of holiday CD's I found this year--some with a new take on old pieces, and some with something entirely new.

Life, loss, music

She has called me twice, declining to leave a name or number.  She doesn't like choral music.  That, she says, is too much like church.  If I want listeners, I should be playing waltzes, marches, and peppy overtures.  I say that doesn't fully represent life, or our listeners.

Bringing opera to kids...NOT!

Dad was out of town at a college reunion, so we decided to take a trip to the movies to see the new Harry Potter with friends.  Lights go down, trailers start, and then...one began.  A young lad is climbing out of a taxi, ubiqitous ominous  music thudding under the images...well, you can see it for yourself.
