We are deeply saddened to share the news that Richard Gladwell passed away on Thursday morning, October 15 at 10:25. He was with his wife, granddaughter, and a dear friend, and died quietly and peacefully.
Richard was diagnosed with brain cancer in June. After surgery he was able to spend time with his extended family, including several weeks at a lake house in upstate New York. Throughout his illness he was surrounded by family and friends in his beautiful sunroom looking out on his beloved garden.
I just received my copy of Opera News and notice on the inside back cover the ad for the upcoing Opera in Cinema presentations in participating theaters. Here in Rochester, opera lovers can enjoy these operas at the Little Theater. Here's what's on the schedule (no dates given in the magazine, except for Live events):
Die Walkure by Wagner from the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Valencia, Spain
Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky rom the Bolshoi Opera at L'Opera de Paris, France
As some of my readers know, in addition to being the Program Director for Classical 91.5 FM, I am also the Program Director for WXXI Reachout Radio, a radio reading/audio information service for people who are print-handicapped, due to visual impairment or physical disability.
Many listeners have been asking about Richard Gladwell's health and when he will be returning to With Heart & Voice. WXXI Radio Vice President Jeanne Fisher and I went and visited Richard, and his lovely wife Claire, last week. At our meeting it became very apparent that Richard will not be able to return to hosting With Heart & Voice.
The 2009-2010 Metropolitan Opera HD Theater presentations will include nine operas this season. We just received confirmation that the Metropolitan Opera HD Theater presentations will be available at Cinemark Tinseltown on Buffalo Road in Rochester. We are awaiting confirmation of the Regal Eastview presentations.
The Met at the Movies broadcasts will all be at 1:00 p.m. and are as follows: (note: the radio simulcasts begin in December 2009)
Oct 10, 2009 - Tosca by Giacomo Puccini (new production)
Classical music lovers who just can't get enough, or who want to be "in the know" about classical music, should check out NPR's new music site. NPR Music www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php provides listeners with brief news stories, audio stories, and performances from artists who are currently performing everywhere from the concert hall to one of the offices at NPR. I've pointed you to the Classical page, but there's lots of other music available at NPR Music as well. Check out NP
We at WXXI Classical 91.5 are thrilled to announce that Brenda Tremblay has been promoted to the full-time position of Morning Drive Host/Producer, replacing Simon Pontin who retired from the Super Scintillating Sunshine Show in May 2009.
Congratulations to Julia Figueras, Dave Sluberski, Andrew Croucher and the Cello Divas, Backstage Passwho were awarded a Bronze World Medal for Backstage Pass in the category of Best Regularly Scheduled Music Program by the New York Festivals!
