Behind the Scenes with the Mercury Opera

Midday host Julia Figueras goes On Record to find out about a new opera production.

Mercury Opera Artistic Director Benton Hess, Olga Makarina from the Metropolitan Opera and Dinyar Vania from the New York City Opera join Julia Figueras on Wednesday, 1/13 at 1:00 p.m. to talk about the company’s newest production of La Traviata.  David Bartholomew returns to direct the production, and Metropolitan opera star Olga Makarina will be making her Mercury Opera debut as Violetta.

Met at the Movies begins in October!

The 2009-2010 Metropolitan Opera HD Theater presentations will include nine operas this season.  We just received confirmation that the Metropolitan Opera HD Theater presentations will be available at Cinemark Tinseltown on Buffalo Road in Rochester.  We are awaiting confirmation of the Regal Eastview presentations.
 
The Met at the Movies broadcasts will all be at 1:00 p.m. and are as follows:  (note: the radio simulcasts begin in December 2009)

Bringing opera to kids...NOT!

Dad was out of town at a college reunion, so we decided to take a trip to the movies to see the new Harry Potter with friends.  Lights go down, trailers start, and then...one began.  A young lad is climbing out of a taxi, ubiqitous ominous  music thudding under the images...well, you can see it for yourself.

Classical music connections

We in Rochester are so blessed to have lots of resources right here in our area to enjoy great classical music.  The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra & Youth Orchestra, the Eastman School of Music and all of its ensembles, the Hochstein School, Madrigalia, Rochester Oratorio Society -- those that we all think of immediately are just the tip of the iceberg.  There are so many other great regional orchestras, choirs, operas, church and school music...too many to name individually.

January 10th Met @ the Movies at Eastview has technical problems

It has come to our attention that the Metropolitan Opera HD simulcast of La Rondine by Puccini was not able to be shown as scheduled at Regal Eastview.
