    Hi Kathy,

Thanks for sharing about your experience while attending Fairport's recent graduation. It sounds like the crowd at Blue Cross Arena managed to show their support in an appropriate manner (while avoiding getting arrested!). Amazing, huh?

One would think that we could find a happy medium between no celebrating and excessive or rude interjections. I think you hit the nail on the head with "loosen up everybody!"

    Hi Andy,

I think that your "multiplication effect" theory is very valid and it is one that I had not considered. In thinking about that, I would be curious to see the children's biological parents' bios posted on the Baby Borrowers website (the teen parents' info is already there), just to know a little more about them.

Also of interest, the Baby Borrowers website has posted a few quotes from reviews of the show:

"The cleverest conceit of any reality show in a long time" - New York Times

"One of the most innovative forms of birth control..." - Star Tribune

    Hi, Gary,

You're absolutely right. To clarify, I'm equating the word "boring" with "mundane" and "simple." But hypnotic, too. Absorbing. Have you listened to Lauridsen's "Lux Aeterna?"

I hope you have described the award correctly as a knick-knack.
If it turns out instead to be a trifle, I shall be a trifle disappointed.

I am greatly honored, I think. On my windowsill, I have cleared a prominent space for the knick-knack. I just hope it will be the right color.

But if not, that will be of no great consequence.

"Y'know Fred, sometimes I feel like I'm hardly making a dent in the stuff I need to do. Of course, I hate to use that word."
"But Laura, dent you tell me you were gonna forget about all that while we're on vacation?"
"No I dent, not exactly. I said 'set it all aside,' which is not the same. The only way I'm gonna get ahead is by dent of hard work on everything."
"Well I dent understand why you can't just let go for a little while...
By the way, Laura, you probably can't see it, but I think you may have developed a new concave dimple in your bell. Dent worry, though--it adds character and looks kinda cute from here."

I agree Julie! I recently attended the Fairport High graduation at the Blue Cross Arena. There were thousands of people there to watch more than 600 students cross the stage. We were warned about cheering and the use of devices such as airhorns. The airhorn ban I can agree with. But, the excuse that cheering would drown out the next student's name was absurd. The first student to cross the stage did so to silence and it was sad. No cheers, nothing. She probably wondered if she had any family there. It didn't last though. The cheering and whooping commenced along with the occasional rude noisemaker. But, all in all, it was pretty restrained. The person reading each graduate's name just waited a second for the cheering to die down before reading the next name. Not too difficult and the kids were thrilled to be recognized by the audience. What have we turned into that we can't cheer on the kids when they do so well? It's far more fun and memorable to celebrate together! Loosen up everybody!

Maybe the parents justify it by thinking that the lessons learned by the teens who participate are multiplied out to many other teens who are viewing the televised result?

Brrr, it's getting colder. I'm very attracted to you, Laura, but please don't laugh if I become unable to maintain the same degree of attention.

“Fred, remember the good old days when we could actually hear each other onstage? How the heck did that get so lost amidst all the plans for renovated glitz and glamour?
Half the audience believe they can now hear us better because the sound of the Theatre, although much worse, is l-o-u-d-e-r. We are all being sold a bill of goods by powerful folk who apparently know how to look but not how to listen.”
“Now Laura, watch out! We are but pawns in a game of aggrandizement. You know how scared everybody is over next door to say anything publically about the sound. It sure would have been nice to have been asked how the changes are impacting our job onstage. But no, we and even our esteemed neighbors next door are merely the hired help.”

Hey Fred, could you look for a review of the Mahler in today's Times?
Ol' Puffy Chops shoved quite a few clams through me last night.
I was downright embarrassed during the Finale.

The secret to success as an instrumental musician? Well, I don’t know why the rest of you guys make it so complicated.
Basically I just show up on time. Then I go ‘OOM’ on the downbeat and ‘PAH’ on the following upbeat. Finally, I am very careful to stop playing when everybody else does.

Fred, may I tell you something a bit odd? I was just dozing, and I had a very realistic dream in which people were making fun of us, actually putting words into our mouths.
It was very unsettling. I felt like a fool. The worst part was, there was a guy who kept making off-color references to that lovely massive bell of yours. I really wanted to tell him to get a life, but then I woke up.

Well, Laura, I have no idea where she went, but being stuck here is not nearly as absurd as is counting 72 bars of rest, going blurp-dy blurp blurple, and then counting more rests. Here we can set all that aside and reflect on a few things.
