The Los Angeles Philharmonic welcomes Gustavo Dudmel as their new music director.

Bursting on to the international scene in 1999 as the 18-year-old wunderkind conductor of the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, Gustavo Dudamel has taken the classical music world by storm. In fall 2009, he will become the new music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Great Performances joins the opening night festivities for Dudamel’s inaugural gala concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on October 8. Great Performances: Los Angeles Philharmonic Opening Gala with Gustavo Dudamel airs Wednesday, October 21 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable1011/cable11). The concert’s repertoire is currently planned to include Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, as well as the premiere of John Adams’ City Noir (a commission of the LA Philharmonic).

Dudamel Inaugural Concert Sound

The reason for going to a live concert is clear. In the PBS broadcast, the sound mixing for the Dudamel inaugural concert in Los Angeles was obviously done by a technician who had no sense that classical music depends on contrasts, and that it's not only okay, but crucial that when the music is soft, the sound not be turned up for the hard-of-hearing. The Mahler was a comedy rather than a drama because these contrasts were not allowed to happen. Whenever the full orchestra -- including brass, woodwinds, strings and percussion played at fortissimo, the sound suddenly was inexplicably softer than when, say, the strings alone were playing passionately.

Dudamel spoke in the beginning about how the entire piece came to a climax at the end. The sound editor wouldn't let that happen, however, and turned the volume down. And as a final straw, the applause was louder than the orchestra at full blast!!
