Christmas with Madrigalia
Christmas with Madrigalia
Fri, 12/11/2009 - 12:00pm
Madrigalia returns for another musical Christmas celebration.
"O Magnum Mysterium" is the traditional chant for Christmas morning. Its simple, yet elegant text has inspired composers through the ages to depict the great mystery of the King of Kings born among humble animals and shepherds. This year Madrigalia returns for another musical celebration of Christmas, centered on the Missa O Magnum Mysterium by 16th century Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria. The one-hour program, conducted by Tomas Folan and recorded live in concert at Saint Anne Church in Rochester, features Victoria’s Christmas mass, along with a diverse mix of holiday music, from medieval English through contemporary American Jazz. Christmas with Madrigalia airs Friday, December 11 at 12 p.m. and Friday, December 25 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5/90.3/FM-HD 91.5-1.
Founded in 1975, Madrigalia has built an extensive repertoire encompassing traditional and contemporary styles of secular and sacred choral literature from the Renaissance through the twenty-first century. The eighteen-member ensemble uses choral music as a powerful tool to communicate humor, sorrow, prayer, meditation, celebration and remembrance.
