Dialogue on Disability Programming on Reachout Radio
Dialogue on Disability Programming on Reachout Radio
WXXI's 24-hour radio reading service for those who are visually impaired, Reachout Radio presents special programming in honor of Dialogue on Disability week.
As part of its annual Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series, WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies are pleased to present a variety of radio programs on WXXI Reachout Radio. A radio reading service that provides 24-hour per day readings of local and national newspapers, magazines, and books for people who are print-handicapped, Reachout Radio is closed-circuit and is accessible through a specially-tuned radio which is provided free of charge to eligible applicants. The service is provided in partnership with ABVI-Goodwill Industries of Greater Rochester.
Below are Dialogue on Disability programs that will be featured during the week:
ACB Reports airs Sunday, January 17 at 5 p.m. Monthly report from the American Council of the Blind (national) – This month’s report features the National Library Service presentation called “Building the Nearly Perfect Book” about accessible audio books. There will also be a report about a student from Macedonia who interned with the ACB last summer, as well as legislative updates for people with disabilities.
Enabled airs Sunday, January 17 at 12:30 p.m. and Monday, January 18 at 5 p.m. Host Nancy Zimmer takes a deep look into Cerebral Palsy and its connections to cortical blindness.
Silver Threads airs Tuesday, January 19 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, January 23 at 2 p.m. Host Kathy VanSchaick takes on Medical Motors and the service it provides for seniors and people with disabilities – as well as the job market for seniors.
Sound Body airs Tuesday, January 19 at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, January 23 at 2:30 p.m. Host Louise Craig tackles the mysteries of Multiple Sclerosis – the difficulty in diagnosis, the many changing symptoms, and its effect on vision loss.
Risk Taker: Path Maker airs Thursday, January 21 at 5 p.m. The story of Mike May, world-record-holder in downhill skiing for the blind and CEO of Sendero Group, developers of the talking GPS system for the blind.
Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series, a partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies, is a week-long outreach initiative designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with disabilities. At the heart of this initiative is programming broadcast on WXXI-TV and AM 1370 that celebrates the amazing lives of people with disabilities. Dialogue on Disability runs January 18-24. Dialogue on Disability is made possible thanks to support from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation.
