Shipping Out: The Story of America's Seafaring Women
Shipping Out: The Story of America's Seafaring Women
Wed, 03/20/2013 - 2:00pm
Meet women who hold jobs in commercial shipping, working on container ships, bulk cargo carriers and tankers, as well as coastal tugs, barges, and ferry boats, all on America’s waterways.
This unusual documentary tells the history of women and seafaring in America. We meet modern women performing jobs in commercial shipping. They work on container ships, tankers, tugs and other vessels, as pilots, engineers, mates and ordinary 'seamen'. Shipping Out explores the history, mythologies and attitudes which limited women's participation in seafaring until recent times. Shipping Out airs Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 2 p.m. on PBS World (Cable 524/DT 21.2).

One of my aunts was a navigator on a US cruiser during WWII and an astronomer at a major university. She nurtured an entire generation into the sciences and medicine. Of her 16 nieces and nephews 7 had post graduate degrees and 8 of the remaining slouchers had at least a bachelors.
