Great Big Sea in Concert on WXXI-TV

Sun, 09/26/2010 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Hailing from Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian band Great Big Sea are popular worldwide for performing energetic interpretations of traditional Celtic-flavored songs from the maritime provinces.

Imagine growing up in the Atlantic Canada in the '70s. There's no FM radio--it doesn't arrive in this region until the end of the decade. You hear AM radio pop hits blasting out of your stereo, in stark contrast to the Celtic-influenced music of the region that permeates the rest of your life. This perfectly describes the musical upbringing of Newfoundland’s Great Big Sea. The band performs native folk songs, Irish-English-French derived songs, sea shanties and original tunes.

The award-winning group released their tenth studio album Safe Upon The Shore on July 13; after nearly 20 years as a band, their songs continue to reflect a schizophrenic musical background. The title track is a stark acappella sailor’s lament; “Good People” celebrates a sunny, 60’s pop feel, and a Celtic music influence flavors “Nothing But A Song,” “Over The Hills” and “Yankee Sailor.” Now, you can watch them in concert with WXXI-TV presents Great Big Sea in Concert on Sunday, September 26 at 7 p.m. During the broadcast you'll learn more about the band's September 30th concert at the German House and how you can get tickets while supporting your local public broadcasting station.

Please note: This special will air in place of Artist's Den with Ingrid Michaelson, which will air Sunday, October 31st at 7pm.
