WXXI World presents two back-to-back documentaries dedicated to our fine feathered friends.

Journey of the Broad-winged Hawk airs Monday, August 1 at 7 p.m. followed immediately by Rare Bird at 8 p.m. on WXXI World (cable 524/DT21.2).

Journey of the Broad-winged Hawk - Every year, broad-winged hawks embark on a 4,500-mile journey from New Hampshire to South America. This is the story of their flight and the connections they make with people and communities throughout their ambitious journey. Host Willem Lange traces the migratory route of these magnificent birds from the White Mountains to the Andes of Ecuador, and shares the stories of those who witness this wonder of nature.

Rare Bird - Encroaching development, invasive species and toxic pesticides, in addition to its nocturnal habits and tendency to nest along inaccessible ocean-side cliffs, all conspired to shield the Cahow from human view, further cementing the belief that the species died out. Shot on location in nature reserves throughout Bermuda, this against-all-odds story about a man, a "ghost bird" and a struggle for survival takes a dramatic turn as the bird faces a greater threat: global warming. Ravaged by a recent hurricane, how will Wingate (now a conservationist) and his successor save the species once again from oblivion?
