This charismatic foursome returns with a spirited Christmas special.

Tonic Sol-fa has spent the past decade on the road, refining their art and carving their niche as the nation’s top vocal group. In that time, this quartet were named one of the top five “must-see” groups in the United States, were awarded numerous original song and album awards in pop, gospel and holiday genres, and appeared on NBC’s Today Show and in the pages of Newsweek magazine — all of which earned them an intensely loyal following. And recently, the Midwest Chapter of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences honored the group with an Emmy for their arrangement of “Rockin' on Top of the World.”

Now, Tonic Sol-fa returns to public television with their third special, Tonic Sol-fa: Greatest Time of Year. The one-hour Christmas concert, taped at the historic Hoyt Sherman Theater in Des Moines, Iowa, airs Saturday, December 25 at 2 p.m. on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable 11/cable 1011).

Tonic Sol-fa: Greatest Time of Year features the group’s tight vocal harmonies, outstanding arrangements of holiday favorites and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage that showcases the chemistry among members Mark McGowan, Greg Bannwarth, Shaun Johnson and Jared Dove. The program also highlights the group's trademark humor and playful interactions with an enthusiastic audience.

Over the course of an hour, the quartet performs an eclectic mix of songs: from traditional holiday fare — “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Holiday Medley” from the Nutcracker Suite,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “The First Noel,” and “Do You Hear What I Hear,” to contemporary covers of Lindsey Buckingham’s “Holiday Road” (popularized in the film Vacation), Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby,” “Y.M.C.A.” by the Village People, Mariah Carey’s “Miss You Most (at Christmastime),” and their Emmy-winning arrangement of “Rockin' on Top of the World.”
