A Musical Tribute to Fascinatin’ Rhythm

Celebrate the radio show's 30th anniversary with host Michael Lasser and singers Cindy Miller and Alan Jones as they present iconic American songs.

Since it first went on the air as Anything Goes in November 1980, Michael Lasser’s Fascinatin’ Rhythm has played nearly twenty-five thousand songs, from the most famous and beloved to the most quickly (and deservedly) forgotten. To celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary, Lasser has chosen a dozen titles – what he calls the “iconic American songs.” They’re songs nearly everyone knows or at least recognizes. “Night and Day,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Star Dust,” and “Love Is Here To Stay”  just to name a few.  “They’ve become part of our national DNA,” he says, “They’re some of the songs we find ourselves humming because we couldn’t forget them if we tried.”

 Fascinatin' Rhythm explores the history and themes of American popular music from Stephen Foster to Stephen Sondheim. These weekly "radio essays," illustrated by recordings, won the 1994 George Foster Peabody Award for letting "our treasury of popular tunes speak (and sing) for itself with sparkling commentary tracing the contributions of the composers and performers to American society." The Peabody citation called Fascinatin' Rhythm "a celebration of American culture." The program originates from WXXI, and is nationally syndicated.
