Campbell ´╗┐Brothers

Rochester's own Campbell Brothers join host Nick Spitzer for a special American Routes.

It's the 50th anniversary concert of the legendary Arhoolie Records and American Routes is bringing the party to you live from Berkeley's Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse on Saturday, July 2 at 6 p.m. on WRUR-FM 88.5. Nick is joined on stage with the pioneering label's many admirers including roots rock guitarist Ry Cooder, bluesman Taj Mahal, Michael Doucet of Beausoleil, New Orleans' Treme Brass Band, sacred steel masters the Campbell Brothers, the Mexican-American traditionalists Los Cenzontles and many special guests. We'll also chat with Arhoolie's founder, Chris Strachwitz about his passion for putting American roots music on record.

Based in Rochester, New York, the Campbell Brothers present African-American gospel music with electric steel guitar and vocal. Pedal steel guitarist Chuck Campbell and his lap steel-playing brother Darick are two of the finest in this tradition. Rounding out the band, which has been playing together for nearly two decades, is a high-energy rhythm section featuring brother Phil Campbell on electric guitar and his son Carlton on drums. Katie Jackson's classic, gutsy gospel vocals bring the ensemble to a level of energy and expression that defies description. To learn more about the band visit: http://www.campbellbrothers.com/#!

The Campbell Brothers also performed on WXXI's OnStage series. To see a clip and read more, click here.
