Claiming the Title: Gay Olympics on Trial

Fri, 06/08/2012 - 9:30pm

In 1982, a San Francisco athletic group tried to hold a "Gay Olympics". This instigated what will ultimately become a battle at the U.S. Supreme Court and a challenge over the place of gays and lesbians in American Society. The Supreme Court is widely viewed as the country's chief defender of civil rights. Yet its long-hidden struggle with demands for gay equality points to a more complicated reality. The inner workings of the Court are exposed, revealing an institution and individual justices - real people with human emotions and deeply felt assumptions - divided and in conflict. Claiming the Title: Gay Olympics on Trial airs Friday, June 8, 2012 at 9:30 p.m. on WXXI World (DT21.2/cable 524). This program encores Sunday, June 17 at 4:40 p.m., and Wednesday, June 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
