Raising 100,000 Voices Screening at the Little

Join us for a free screening of a collection of mini-documentaries produced by local teens.

Raising 100,000 Voices, a series of teen-produced mini-documentaries that focus on the issues young people face as they emerge into adulthood, will screen at the Little Theatre on Thursday, May 10 at 6 p.m. Hosted by project coordinators, WXXI, the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), and Roadwork For Success In Young Adulthood, the screening is free and open to the public. The Raising 100,000 Voices project, which launched in November 2005, was designed to help teens, between the ages of 15 and 24, communicate the needs and assets of their community from their points of view. Each participant was given a digital video camera and asked to produce a three-minute documentary on a topic that concerned him or her. Since the project’s inception, 190 videos have been produced and screened at various venues.

Twenty videos will screen at the Little on May 10. The topics include: the importance of friendships, how music and art play a role in our well-being, AIDS, teen violence and bullying, and how technology helps one filmmaker – who is a quadriplegic – navigate the world successfully. This year's program is sponsored by WXXI, URMC, and its partner agencies.

Participating organizations include: Charles Settlement House, Inc., The Community Place of Greater Rochester, Inc.’s Youth-Adult Partnership/Sankofa Leadership Academy (YAP/SLA), Dazzle School of Visual and Performing Arts, Inc., Teens Advocating Nonviolence (TAN) of Parsells Avenue Community Church, Edison Technical and Occupational Center of the Rochester City School District (RCSD), Monroe County Youth on the Move, Office of Mental Health Promotion at the University of Rochester, and Youth Empowerment Production Program (Y.E.P.P.) of Grace Community Village, Inc.
