Native Waters: A Chitimacha Recollection

The Chitimacha Indians of the Atchafalaya Basin in Louisiana are known as "the People of many waters." This documentary film project emphasizes that there are different means of knowing and remembering--and they are not mutually exclusive. The small Chitimacha Indian Tribe will offer one an alternative way of recalling Native American history. 

Native Waters: A Chitimacha Recollection, airing Monday, November 26, 2012 at 9:30 p.m. on WXXI World (DT21.2/cable524), will present audiences with a vision of one of the most unique natural landscapes in North America--the Atchafalaya Basin, which is the largest river swamp in America. The Atchafalaya River itself is a former channel of the Mississippi River, now feeding nearly a million acres of bottomland hardwoods, bayous and backwater lakes. This vast expanse of low lying wetlands comprises one of the most complex and fragile ecosystems on the continent.
