WXXI News has won two “Excellence in Broadcasting” awards from the New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA) for its Exited podcast and a two-part story on the Great Lakes. The NYSBA competition recognizes outstanding achievement among radio and TV stations in New York State.
Exited, a podcast from WXXI News’ Inclusion Desk about young people with disabilities planning for the future, received the award in the ‘Outstanding Use of Digital Platforms’ category. The five-part series shares the stories of eight young people as they navigate transitions in various settings – high school, higher education, sheltered workshops, day programs and home life. WXXI News’ Inclusion Desk is a multi-platform reporting effort designed to inform and transform attitudes and behavior about inclusion. It is part of the Move to Include initiative – a partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation.
Deadly Winter, a two-part report on the deadly results of unstable ice across the Great Lakes region, garnered the award in the ‘Outstanding Public Affairs Program or Series’ category. The report, produced by WBFO and WXXI, is part of Great Lakes Today, a regional journalism collaborative to increase coverage of the iconic Great Lakes and the people who live in the region.
