In America Abroad's Winning the Peace: Rebuilding Nations from the Ashes of Conflict, airing Saturday, November 22 at 3 p.m. on AM 1370 and WXXI-FM HD 91.5-2, former Secretary of State Colin Powell was fond of citing the so-called Pottery Barn Rule, "You break it, you own it." The U.S. had no trouble breaking the Taliban's hold in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq. But rebuilding those nations has proved much more difficult.
Winning the Peace: Rebuilding Nations from the Ashes of Conflict takes a look at why the U.S. has struggled to put Humpty Dumpty back together again in Iraq and Afghanistan. It treads the halls of the Pentagon, Foggy Bottom and Capitol Hill to see how many of the problems of rebuilding Iraq and Afghanistan begin here at home. And it heads to Baghdad to take a look at how U.S. military and civilian teams have made a course correction that could help to stabilize Iraq. The program also revisits lessons learned and forgotten of past U.S. efforts to help reconstruct broken nations after war.
