Young orphan Anne

Precocious yet lovable Anne Shirley returns to public television in Anne of Green Gables, airing Sunday, March 8 at 12:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) and WXXI-HD (cable 1011 and DT21.1), the classic series that chronicle the trials and tribulations of a young orphan girl navigating her way through life.

For generations, this classic children’s novel has captured the hearts of children and adults alike. Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery published the novel in 1908 and the story’s fairytale charm, emotional power and endless wit has made it a fixture in children’s libraries around the world for nearly a century. The drama first premiered on public television in 1986 and garnered several prestigious awards, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program, nine Academy of Canadian Cinema and TV Gemini Awards, a Peabody Award, and TV Guide’s Most Popular Program for 1986.

Megan Follows stars as the delightful, unpredictable redhead Anne Shirley. She perfectly portrays the young orphan girl who both charms – and offends – nearly all of Prince Edward Island. Anne must prove her worth from the very beginning of her stay on Green Gables, a farm run by an elderly bachelor, Matthew Cuthbert, and his spinster sister, Marilla. After all, Matthew and Marilla requested a boy from the orphanage to help with the chores. The story proceeds with Anne’s countless misadventures, typically caused by her hopelessly dramatic nature, that amazingly make her all the more endearing.

Anne of Green Gables is a universally beloved story. It is a timeless coming- of-age tale that encapsulates the magic and wonder of childhood through the eyes of an imaginative and spirited orphan. The program’s return to public television brings a classic back for countless fans to enjoy and introduces a new generation to the enchanting story.
