Martin Sheen as Kennedy

Forty-five years after his death, John F. Kennedy remains one of America’s most celebrated and influential leaders. He was the nation’s first Roman Catholic president, its richest, the youngest man to be elected to the presidency and, tragically, the youngest to die in office. His administration attracted some of the most brilliant young men and women in America, and the seemingly idyllic relationship between him and his beautiful wife Jackie captured the imagination of people the world over. Kennedy airs Saturday, November 22 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11).

Kennedy
is the dramatic tale of John F. Kennedy and his famous family. Starring Martin Sheen (The West Wing, Apocalypse Now, The Departed) as JFK, this acclaimed miniseries is the definitive behind-the-scenes story of Kennedy’s triumphant and tumultuous years in office.

Beginning the night before his election in November 1960 and going up to the afternoon of his assassination on Nov. 22, 1963, Kennedy covers the momentous events of the administration—including the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, the racial conflict that plagued the southern United States, the escalating involvement in Vietnam, and the Cuban Missile crisis. The miniseries also chronicles Kennedy’s active private life, from the death of his infant son to his numerous high-profile affairs to his battles with the sinister J. Edgar Hoover.

Featuring actual news footage and an all-star supporting cast, including Blair Brown as Jackie Kennedy and E.G. Marshall as Joe Kennedy, Kennedy is a gripping, unforgettable portrait of one of America’s most memorable heads of state.

"Kennedy"

I must admit that though I lived through the Kennedy years, I was quite confused when the broadcast of "Kennedy" began on WXXI on Saturday evening. Did you choose to start part-way into the film? According to my "googling," the film runs 300 minutes (five hours) and your schedule only allows for three. Did I miss the beginning, perhaps shown at a different time? I'm glad you aired this movie. November 22nd will always hold special significance for me. Cindy Hedges

"Kennedy" running time approximately 2 hours, 48 minutes.

Dear Cindy,

Thank you so much for writing to WXXI regarding the film "Kennedy" which was aired on WXXI-TV 21 on Saturday, November 22nd from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

WXXI aired the complete version of the film as made available to PBS member stations. I found on a commercial web site the alternate time of 282 minutes, but this may be either due to the fact that the film originally aired on a commercial station as a mini-series and was interrupted by commercials, or that the bonus features made available on the DVD set are counted along with the total running time. I don't quite know the reason for that posting of the alternate running time, but am grateful for your inquiry and the chance you've given us to respond.

I am glad you were able to view the film on the 45th anniversary of President Kennedy's death, and I thank you so much for participating on WXXI.org.

Please do post again, or contact my desk directly at (585) 258-0244 with further Television Programming inquiries or comments.

Sincerely,
Lynne
