March of the Penguins

March of the Penguins, airing Thursday, March 5 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) and WXXI-HD (cable 1011 and DT21.1), artfully narrated by Morgan Freeman, documents the emperor penguin’s 60-mile trek across the barren Antarctic terrain — an annual journey marking the start of their mating season. This extraordinarily heartwarming film won a 2006 Academy Award for Best Documentary and has become the second most successful documentary in North America since it was released by Warner Independent Films and National Geographic Feature Films on June 24, 2005.
Filmed over the course of a year, this 80-minute documentary encourages the audience to experience the world through the eyes of the emperor penguin as the creatures come face to face with the utter brutality of the Antarctic autumn and winter. Nothing seems to halt the penguins’ breeding ritual, not even the extreme negative temperatures or their constant battle with starvation and predators.
Join these mysterious and at times hilarious creatures as they flock together for this customary march that has taken place for thousands of years. Along the way, experience the celebration of life as well as the devastation of death in a film that is both comedic and tragic. This uplifting tale – which teaches that even “in the harshest place on earth, love finds a way” – has moved audiences with its gripping story line, cinematography, and narration.
