WXXI and Hochstein School of Music and Dance present David Hochstein Recital Competition Winners in Concert on Wednesday November 27th at 12:10 p.m. on Classical 91.5, 90.3, and streaming online at wxxi.org.


The annual David Hochstein Recital Competition recognizes the outstanding musicianship and performance skills of advanced student musicians in grades 10-12 who reside in a nine-county region surrounding Greater Rochester. This program was recorded in April, 2013 by Carl Pultz of Alembic Productions. Note: No live show at the Hochstein Recital Hall today due to the Thanksgiving holiday week.


Violinist Helen K. Wong, a sophmore at Webster Schroeder High School, is co-concertmaster of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. She has soloed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, performed at Carnegie Hall, and attended the National Arts Centre's Summer Music Institute, led by Pinchas Zuckerman. She began studying violin at age 6 with Boris Zapesochny of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. On this recital she plays music by Bach and Sibelius.

 

Pianist Kathryn (Kate) Blaine is a sophmore at Brighton High School. She studies at the Eastman Community Music School, where she is working toward pre-collegiate diplomas with honors in piano performance, taught by Harriet Zimmerman, and music theory. Recent accolades include 1st prize in the Nazareth College Bach Piano Competition senior category, and with the Tanka Quintet, coached by the Eastman School of Music's George Taylor, first prize in the Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music Youth Competition. On this program, she plays music by J.S. Bach, Liszt, and Brahms.


Saxophonist Stephanie Venturino is a senior from Palmyra, who studies with Dr. Chien-Kwan Lin, professor of saxophone at the Eastman School of Music. She has garnered numerous recent honors, including the ECMS 2012 Young Artist Award, the 2013 Virtuosi Woodwind Competition, and the 2012 New York State Music Teachers Association Senior Woodwind Competition. In addition to her saxophone studies, Stephanie studies piano with Alla Kuznetsov and participates in the Krusternjema Scholarship Flute Choir, the ECMS Clarinet Choir, and the Towpath Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps. She plans to pursue a degree in saxophone performance in the fall. On this recital, she plays Jacques Ibert's
Concertino da Camera and Klonos by Piet Swerts.

Hosted by Classical 91.5's Mona Seghatoleslami, Live from Hochstein is the longest running live broadcast concert series in Western New York. Broadcast live from the Hochstein Performance Hall (50 North Plymouth Ave. in Rochester), the series presents performances by some of the finest artists from the Rochester area’s musical community. Each of these free “brown bag” concerts runs from 12:10-12:50 p.m., giving downtown business people, teachers, families, students and friends an opportunity to enjoy classical music during their lunch hour.
