The Prohibition era takes over on WXXI-TV/HD

If you're a fan of "The Civil War," "Jazz" and "Baseball," you will most certainly be glued to WXXI-TV/HD October 2-4 as  we present "Prohibition", a new three-part documentary series by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Set in the era of bathtub gin and bootleggers, the series tells the story of the rise, rule, and fall of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

If you visited WXXI's booth at last weekend's Clothesline Festival and thought that it brought to an end to Rochester's "festival season", I have good news! Coming this weekend will be a celebration of sustainable living to be held in Rochester's High Falls District. The Greentopia Festival – the newest of Rochester festivals – will be held Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18.

There has been an amazing tradition going on in Rochester over the last 25 years -- one of which you may be an enthusiastic participant, or of which you may have no knowledge. The RIT Big Shot has been capturing unique photos of buildings and locations in the Greater Rochester area since 1987.

If you are a fan of local music, you’ve had a great summer to hear performers in clubs, on streets and at festivals throughout the area. From the Rochester International Jazz Festival in June (WXXI recorded nightly for our next Jazz Festival series), Bands on the Bricks at the Public Market (WXXI was there taping The Lou Graham Band concert), The GrassRoots Festival (WRUR and WITH hosted a live remote from there), East End Festival or Park Ave Festival – not to mention the open mic nights in venues across Rochester – this has been a spectacular music season.

I’m sure you have been following the battle in Washington for a solution to the debt crisis. As the framework of the plan is put in place, we look on with interest here at WXXI, because the future of public broadcasting may be significantly affected.

I recently received a letter from one of our Honorary Trustees commenting on the article that appeared in the newest issue of Metropolitan Magazine. Though the letter was addressed to me, it could speak to every person involved with making WXXI such an invaluable community resource.

For several years, one of our core service areas has been health. WXXI has been aggressive in helping educate the community about healthier behaviors and has made great inroads to providing resources through our “Healthy You” initiative.
