Our volunteers are the lifeblood of WXXI

At WXXI, we strive to develop a healthy and engaged community through our programs and services. One of the ways we measure the success of that mission is through the ardent support of our volunteers who value what we do so much that they give freely of their time. In appreciation of their commitment, we recently had the pleasure of hosting our Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception. The event celebrated our countless volunteers and thanked them for their dedication to the station throughout the year. I also had the honor that evening of presenting Jim Sheldon with the Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year Award. Though it’s difficult to select just one person from the many individuals who contribute daily to WXXI’s success, Jim Sheldon embodies the spirit of the perfect volunteer. As a member of the station since 1981, Jim has offered his services in nearly every facet of the station, from pledge drives to mailings to working events like our upcoming Speaking of Women’s Health Conference. But not only does he volunteer, Jim is a regular presence here at the station with kind words and a great infectious enthusiasm. To find out more about Jim and our other award winners, you can read a recap of the evening here.
Though membership gifts provide for our programming and services, volunteering at WXXI is another essential way to directly support the station. Volunteers play a crucial role in our success. In 2009 they donated 11,365 hours and every part of WXXI’s many endeavors to present music, culture, news and education to the community benefited from the efforts of our volunteers. Whether they are members of our Board of Trustees or Reachout Radio readers or docents giving public tours of the station, the wide-ranging commitment of our volunteer staff is immeasurable. With all the program efforts, events and activities going on, we have volunteer positions in almost every area – and we always have more opportunities arising. So if you have ever considered volunteering at WXXI, we would love to hear from you! You can visit our Volunteer Page by clicking here, or call James Pospula, our Station Events and Volunteer Manager at (585) 258-0287 and he will get you started. Dedicate as little or as much time as you are able, because – like our membership gifts – every little bit helps!
My sincere gratitude goes out to each and every one of our volunteers. Your gift of time and commitment to WXXI makes what we do every day possible. And if you are considering joining our volunteer group, I look forward to seeing you at the station!
