The Xerox Rochester International Jazz Fest is finally here and in full swing. WXXI and the Little Theatre have been gearing up for the Festival for months now. It all started last April with the premiere of season five of our TV series – Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, which featured five performances from last year's Festival. Those episodes can be seen again this week as we present encore broadcasts on WXXI-TV every evening at midnight through June 29th.
This year, WXXI is taping four concerts in Kilbourn Hall for a whole new season. Our crew has already recorded performances by Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet and Vijay Iyer and they'll continue capturing the sights and sounds of upcoming performances by Louis Hayes & The Cannonball Legacy Band and Diane Schuur.
In addition to taping those four concerts, WXXI will present special news coverage and jazz programming throughout the nine-day event. Be sure to tune in to AM 1370 and WRUR-FM 88.5 during Morning Edition and All Things Considered to hear commentary about the festival and the artists. Connections with Evan Dawson, and Need to Know Rochester will also feature interviews with some of this year's Jazz Fest performers, and Classical 91.5 pays tribute to the Jazz Fest by presenting classical music influenced by jazz.
At the Little Theatre we're featuring something new this year: Salena’s Sangriaville, located outside the entrance of Theaters 2-5 on Winthrop Street, will be serving sangria and other cold drinks in the open air during the Jazz Festival. The Little Café will also offer free musical performances nightly, as well as a full food and drink menu. Theaters 2-5 will be open for business, screening its regularly scheduled films — while Little Theatre 1 (which is being called The Freed Maxick Jazz Theatre) is once again an official Club Pass venue this year.
