Drs. Jacques & Dawn Lipson named WXXI Associates of the Year

On November 14th, WXXI hosted our annual Associates Event at Monroe Golf Club and brought in NPR White House Correspondent Scott Horsley as our guest speaker. Scott shared a behind-the-scenes look at the White House and what it’s like reporting on the policy and politics of the Obama Administration.

During the evening we also honored the late Jacques Lipson, MD and his wife Dr. Dawn Lipson by naming the couple WXXI’s Associates of the Year. The award is presented to an individual whose commitment to WXXI has helped the station fulfill its mission – to provide exceptional programming and services that improve the quality of life in our community.

Jacques loved this community and together with his wife Dawn, made significant contribution in support of it. A well-respected physician, who remained in practice until just a few years ago, Jacques had a great love for music. He was a faithful listener to Classical 91.5 and when he was in the hospital, we brought him a radio and it was always tuned to our station. For Jacques, PBS NewsHour was must-see TV. He and Dawn met Gwen Ifill when she came to the station a few years ago and we had Jim Lehrer sign a book for Jacques for his 80th birthday.

When Jacques passed away in May, I was honored to be among those who spoke at his funeral. He is greatly missed, but his name lives on at the many institutions he and Dawn have supported including the Lipson Cancer Center.

Dawn has been a member of the WXXI Board of Trustees since 2008.  When we were in the quiet phase of our $17 million Go Public Campaign, Dawn’s input was instrumental to our success. Dawn and Jacques were among the lead givers to the Campaign, establishing The Dawn and Jacques Lipson Programing Fund.

To commemorate the award, a tree will be planted in Highland Park in their honor and their names will be inscribed on WXXI’s Associate of the Year plaque.

Public Radio Music Month

As April is upon us and it brings with it more than just the first hint of spring. April is also Public Radio Music Month  — a national campaign to help raise the visibility of the diverse music that can only be found on public radio. We are fortunate in our community to have two such stations: Classical 91.5 and WRUR 88.5.

Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month, and WXXI's investment in bringing the stories and experiences of women can be seen across all of our services. Many of you watched "Makers: Women Who Make America" (featuring Ursula Burns, CEO of Xerox, and the first African-American woman to run a Fortune 500 company) or attended the free screening of the program at the Little Theatre.
