WXXI and The Little launch a new initiative for veterans

This month marks the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War. To honor our veterans we are proud to present the Academy Award nominated film Last Days in Vietnam on Tuesday, April 21 at 7 p.m at the Little Theatre. The screening is free and will be followed by a panel discussion. We hope you'll join us for this special events, but if you can't -- you can watch the film on WXXI-TV on Tuesday, April 28 at 9 p.m.

This screening and TV premiere of Last Days in Vietnam is part of a new initiative WXXI and the Little Theatre are launching to help link our veterans, especially returning veterans and their families, with needed community support and services. Through special TV, radio and online programming, documentary films, group discussions, news features, and a comprehensive web site, our Veterans Connections initiative will create a community platform to raise awareness and connect veterans with valuable resources.

Earlier this year, WXXI and The Little convened a “Veterans Affairs Task Force” made up of members of its Board of Trustees and other community leaders.  Its mission was to identify the most pressing needs and issues facing veterans and their families and to recommend ways that WXXI and The Little can utilize programming and outreach efforts to help address those needs. The Task Force is led by Mark Leary, who served 22 years in the U.S. Army, and is currently Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer of Xerox. Leary is also a member of WXXI and Little Theatre Film Society Board of Trustees.

I encourage you to visit WXXI.org/veterans for a complete list of programs from PBS, NPR and WXXI, plus news stories, videos, resources and more.

Four score and seven years ago

You may be hearing a lot about the Gettysburg Address as this year marks the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's iconic speech delivered at the dedication of the cemetery at Gettysburg. By redefining liberty and nationalism by essentially fusing them together, Lincoln not only inspired the North to continue the fight, he forever changed how we think about our country.
