Preparedness Questions After Massive Buffalo Area Snowfall

The NYS Thruway Authority reopened I-90 near Buffalo Friday morning where hundreds of vehicles were stranded beginning Wednesday night.

The vehicles were stranded by accidents and heavy leake effect snow west of Exit 50. Emergency crews and State Troopers were using all terrain vehicles and snowmobiles to check in on and assist those who were stranded.

WIVB-TV posted the full press release from New York State Thruway Authority detailing the situation and how it developed.  You can see for yourself what it looks like in that area now on traffic cameras near Buffalo. The Buffalo News's Donn Esmonde asked how this could happen in normally winter-ready Western New York.  The News also featured this neat interactive graphic demonstrating how lake effect snow storms work.
