Virginia Earthquake Felt Locally, Throughout Northeast
The U.S. Geological Survey reports an earthquake estimated at 5.8 on the Richter scale hit central Virginia just northwest of Richmond.
Buildings in Washington D.C. were evacuated and cell service was disrupted as far away as New York City. The U.S.G.S. reports the earthquake hit at 1:51 p.m. EDT.
Several local people have called the WXXI newsroom to say they felt the quake. You'll hear from them during All Things Considered beginning at 4:00 p.m. only on WXXI-AM 1370.
The U.S.G.S has this online tool for you to see where people reported feeling the quake. The Google Map below shows the approximate location of the epicenter near a small town called Mineral, VA.
