Downton Abbey is "impossible to resist"

As a fan of WXXI-TV, you may already be aware of our rich history of British dramas. With favorites like Upstairs, Downstairs, Prime Suspect, The Forsyte Saga, Little Dorrit and Pride and Prejudice, we have had members of all generations tuning in for the austere clothing, proper manners and irresistible plotlines of our British dramas. But perhaps the program receiving the most buzz, viewership and critical acclaim in recent memory is Downton Abbey. The New York Times calls it, "An instant classic" while The Wall Street Journal says that it is, "Impossible to resist." And that is just the beginning.

We recently held a special screening and reception of the Second Season Premiere at the Dryden Theatre that played to an enthusiastic full house! Facebook and fan clubs have sprung up across the country and the appetite for the program has made the Downton Abbey page at PBS.org a premier destination. In fact, our own programming and membership departments have been so flooded with requests for episodes that we have carved out the heart of our day on Super Bowl Sunday, February 5th, to air a “TouchDownton Abbey Marathon”. The day kicks off at 12:30 p.m. with  Masterpiece’s Return to Cranford, where change is racing towards the small, close-knit village of Cranford like a steam train — quite literally. Then, beginning at 3:30 p.m., we will air episodes 1-5 of the second season of Downton Abbey! Be sure to block out your entire day for the marathon because, as Variety warns, the series is, "Compulsively watchable from the get-go."

Until then you can find shorts, interviews and select episodes online at PBS.org – but for a full, indulgent day of the irresistible Crawley Family, we look forward to having you join us on Super Drama Sunday!
