Murder By Mistletoe
By Mark Grube ~ Posted Fri, 12/18/2009 - 9:59pm
I'm a sucker for this sound. It's The Felice Brothers. I'd recommend it for just the piano break alone, for the way it starts to tip over, but the lyrics are interesting too. There's a man drifting off to sleep in an "attic full of make believe" while carolers sing in the street. Later he watches a woman smile on TV and ends up "laying with last year's love, high as the moon above."
Nat Cole and Vince Guaraldi are great but I tried to find something different for the hoilday editon of Mystery Train. You can hear it Wednesday 12/23 at 6pm and again Saturday the 26th at midnight on 88.5 FM WRUR. The Felice Brothers start it off. They're followed by Joan Baez, who reveals a few items from her Christmas wish list (Woody Guthrie and Emma Goldman among them). There's a version of 'The Little Drummer Boy' that I actually like and a Randy Newman tune sung by someone I've never heard of named Claudine Longet. Mary and Joseph both get time on the therapist's couch, and there's a Hanukkah tune by someone named after Bela Bartok. All this plus Wilco, Marvin Gaye, Pearl Bailey and more.
Happy holidays!
