Dead Shark
By Mark Grube ~ Posted Sat, 11/08/2008 - 1:02pm
Remember that line from "Annie Hall," the one about a relationship being like a shark? "It has to constantly move forward or it dies," Alvy Singer observes. "And I think what we've got on our hands is a dead shark."
The last time I saw the film and heard that line, a song from Harry Nilsson's "The Point" popped into my head. "The Point" is a terrific little animated movie from the early 70's that is genuinely instructive about life, but not in a preachy way. It's supposedly for kids but I know some grown-ups who could benefit from a viewing. Anyway, the song that came to mind was not about a shark but a whale, one who grew so old he decomposed....
He died and left his body
To the bottom of the ocean
Now everybody knows
That when a body decomposes
The basic elements
Are given back to the ocean
And the sea does what it oughta
And soon there's salty water
Not too good for drinking
'Cause it tastes just like a teardrop
So they run it through a filter
And it comes out from a faucet
And it pours into a teapot
Which is just about to bubble
