Thu, 03/28/2013 - 8:00pm

WXXI-FM is proud to present Johann Sebastian Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion airing Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. on Classical 91.5/FM-HD 91.5-1. This special performance was recorded on March 3, 2013 at Asbury First United Methodist Church in Rochester, and features the Eastman Chorale, the Asbury First Choirs, and the Cordancia Chamber Ensemble led by the Eastman School’s Director, Choral Activities, William Weinert.

Bach wrote his Saint Matthew Passion in 1727 for a Good Friday service in Leipzig, and based it on chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew. The work is performed by two choruses, two orchestras and a host of soloists singing various roles in the story.

The monumental Saint Matthew Passion was last performed in Rochester 13 years ago at the Eastman School. WXXI will present the passion as a special for Holy Week and Easter. The broadcast is hosted by WXXI’s Ruth Phinney, and also features a conversation between conductor William Weinert and morning classical host Brenda Tremblay.

The following evening at 8:00, Music of the Baroque will perform Bach’s Mass in B Minor, in a special broadcast for Good Friday.
