Arts Friday: Collecting Music Instruments

Fri, 09/06/2013 - 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Classical 91.5's Mona Seghatoleslami leads a discussion on the role instruments play in telling stories.

Musical instruments tell stories, and not just when they’re being played. The design of music instruments can give us insights into history, technology, and changes in society. And…they’re fun to collect! Come discover the tales of beautiful and unusual old music instruments on the first hour of this week’s Arts Friday on 1370 Connection.

WXXI Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami hosts a discussion with two noted local music instrument collectors: William Destler, who an addition to being president of RIT, collects historical banjos, focusing on the technological development of the banjo from the 1840s to the 1920s; and Jeff Vincent, a piano tuner by trade, who collects and restores instruments that were commonly used for entertainment on street corners a hundred years ago, including monkey organs, carousel organs and barrel pianos.
