Witness a local effort to revisit history as the Genesee Country Village and Museum recreates the largest balloon in the Union Army Balloon Corps.

The Intrepid: Discovering Lincoln’s Balloon Corps, airing Monday, October 21 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV and again on Saturday, October 26 at 6 p.m., recounts the history of the birth and demise of the Union Army Balloon Corps and the effort of the Genesee Country Village and Museum in Mumford, NY to rebuild the Corps’ largest balloon, The Intrepid.  The Union Balloon Corps, originated by Thaddeus Lowe and funded by President Abraham Lincoln, was of critical advantage to the North during the Civil War. One hundred and fifty years after its existence the Museum has meticulously recreated the balloon for use as an interactive experience at the Museum. Peter Coyote narrates this documentary short produced by local filmmakers Matthew and Malcolm Spaull.
