Robert SchumannToday we heard Johnathan Biss playing a selection from Robert Schumann’s Papillons (Butterflies). He "made himself a new ideal world in which he moved almost as he wills," according to one contemporary critic. Musicians are celebrating the 200^th anniversary of his birth today, June 8^th. Born in 1810, Schumann spent his childhood reading like crazy. His father was a bookseller, publisher, and novelist.

Tomorrow . . . a suite of waltzes by one of the most remarkable composers of the 20^th century.
