Vuvuzela Concerto in Bb
By Brenda Tremblay ~ Posted Wed, 06/23/2010 - 9:22am
Thanks to my colleague Chris Van Hof for finding this masterpiece for the famous South African horn. The instrument has been sounding non-stop at the World Cup, and it's great that a composer has finally created a work worthy of its unique timbre. Wednesday's mystery piece bursts with real color and life. It was George Bizet's L’Arlesienne Suite No. 1. It’s rarely heard in its original form of 27 short pieces, which premiered in a theater in 1872. But it's often enjoyed as we heard it this morning, in a suite, sans vuvuzela.
