Assignment: The World is back for a brand new season!

Assignment: The World, produced by WXXI Public Broadcasting in conjunction with The Associated Press, returns to the classroom on Thursday, September 16, 2010. Designed for 4th-8th graders, Assignment: The World (ATW) brings the top news stories from around the globe into classrooms each week. ATW host Teej Jenkins guides students through complex issues in a safe environment. ATW airs on WXXI-TV (DT21.1/cable 1011/cable 11) on Thursdays and Fridays at 6 a.m., beginning September 16th, and on public television stations across the country.

This season continues with interactive components that challenge students to respond to “Clues in the News” and to practice map skills using longitude and latitude coordinates. Students communicate with the producers through weekly emails and responses to the “Question of the Week.” New this year is  “Classroom Viewpoints,” a feature designed to engage students and enable them to express their opinions on global issues and current events through video responses recorded in their schools. Nine classrooms will be chosen this fall to submit their videos for Classroom Viewpoints. Applications for teachers and students who would like to be considered for Classroom Viewpoints are available at atwonline.org/viewpoints. Later in the season, these videos will be posted on ATW’s web site, and selected submissions will be used in the national broadcast.

ATW’s web site, atwonline.org, features an updated look this season, and continues to offer updated program transcripts, lesson plans, and the “Question of the Week.”

ATW is a 15-minute program, designed to fit into the structure of a classroom period. The series has received numerous awards including a Telly, Gold Aurora and a Wilbur Schramm Award of Excellence. ATW is underwritten by Post Pebbles Cereal.
