An Evening with Rick Steves
(Rochester, New York) – Spend an evening with America’s leading authority on European travel when WXXI-TV presents three Rick Steves’ Europe episodes and his recent special, A Symphonic Journey on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 from 8 to 11 p.m. During the evening you’ll learn more about Steves' upcoming visit to Rochester and how you can get tickets to his lecture at Hochstein School of Music & Dance on September 26th.
The evening kicks off at 8 p.m. with London: Mod and Trad, where Steves visits the Millennium Bridge and the British Museum's Great Court, and the well-wrapped mummies and a rare Leonardo. After bantering with Beefeaters at the Tower of London, he'll do some riverside beach-combing, then strolling the trendy South Bank of the Thames taking viewers from the Tate Modern to the dizzying London Eye. After London, Steves visits Vienna, taking viewers through the palace of Maria Theresa and to see the Hapsburg crown jewels. Then he picnics on the Danube, nibbles strudel in an Old World café, blushes at slinky Art Nouveau, and waltzes to the three-four beat of Johann Strauss. Vienna is followed by Paris: Regal and Intimate, where Steves cruises the Seine River, scales the Eiffel Tower, visits Napoleon's tomb, and takes in the Louvre.
The night concludes with Rick Steves Special: A Symphonic Journey, airing at 10 p.m. Taped at the Edmonds Center for the Arts near Seattle, Washington, this program celebrates music's power to stir the patriotic soul. Playing musical tour guide, Steves utilizes his extensive knowledge of European history and culture to help set the context for each piece. Then, the Cascade Symphony Orchestra performs a selection of stirring 19th-century anthems by Romantic-era composers, including Grieg, Smetana, Strauss, Berlioz, Elgar, Wagner and Verdi. Each selection honors a particular nationality, while the finale, Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" (Europe's official anthem) pays homage to the continent's motto of "United in Diversity." The music is accompanied by a montage of evocative video images from each country.
