The Dranoff International Two-Piano Competition: 176 Keys to the World

(Rochester, New York) – WXXI is pleased to bring its listeners The Dranoff International 2-Piano Foundation, a four part series that highlights the foundation and its 2013 competition. The series airs four consecutive Wednesdays, April 16, 23, 30 and May 7 at 8 p.m. on Classical 91.5

The series, hosted by Peter Van De Graff and David Polk, follws the eight top professional semifinalist piano teams from seven countries.  Spending the week in Miami from May 11th through the 16th, 2013, the teams competed for more than $50,000 in cash prizes and worldwide touring contracts.  The competition culminated in the announcement of the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards going to Duo Yamamoto of Japan, Duo Yoo and Kim of South Korea and Duo ImPuls of Germany, respectively.

The Dranoff International 2-Piano Foundation features performance highlights from the competition, including the Dranoff commission by American composer Gabriele Lena Frank, Seis cantos de los campos, Jerome Moross's The Last Judgement, and Shelly Berg's Mary and Martha Mediatations.  Orchestral works heard in the broadcast, conducted by Sarah Hicks and the Dranoff Competition Orchestra, are Francis Poulenc's Concerto for 2 Pianos and Orchestra in D Minor, FP 61 and Victor Babin's Concerto No. 2 for 2 Pianos and Orchestra No.1, Op. 22.

In addition to performances from the competition, the documentary will offer insightful interviews from many of the finalist and semi-finalist teams, including Duo Yoo and Kim; Duo Yamamoto; Duo Ping and Ting (Hong Kong); Lavrova/Primakov Duo (Russia); Duo Bohemes (France/Romania) and Duo ImPuls (Germany).
