Director Bob Fosse categorized many songs from musicals as either “I want” or “I am” songs. According to him, in “I want” songs the main character announces what’s most important to him or her. The musical’s major project is usually then to follow this character on his or her journey towards the fulfillment (or non-fulfillment) of that goal. In “I am” songs, characters describe themselves, which often has little relation to future events in the story.  Join host Robert Hammond as he features “I want” and “I am” songs from Broadway past and present.
