Keynote Speakers

Lisa Sanders, M.D.Lisa Sanders, M.D.Morning Keynote Speaker: Lisa Sanders, M.D.
Presentation Title: Every Patient Tells a Story

Sanders, M.D. is an internist on the faculty of Yale University School of Medicine. She also writes a monthly column for the New York Times called Diagnosis. Her column was the inspiration for the hit Fox TV series House and is the Technical advisor for the show.

Dr. Sanders’ monthly New York Times Magazine column "Diagnosis," explores how a doctor is able to make a diagnosis in patients whose baffling symptoms have brought them back to the office or emergency room time after time. These stories unfold like the classic detective novel, following the doctor-sleuth as he sifts through clues and interrogates witnesses in pursuit of the true culprit and the final diagnosis.

In her new book, Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis, Dr. Sanders takes the reader into the trenches of medical diagnosis. It can be a messy process, filled with red herrings, false leads, and dead ends, and yet, that answer is often reached, and lives are saved. Dr. Sanders is able to translate the intricacies of medical science and technology into stories that the reader can understand and enjoy.

Sanders’ previous book, The Perfect Fit Diet: How to lose weight, keep it off and still eat the foods you love, grew out of her research into low carbohydrate diets – the first study to compare the efficacy of that diet to low fat and low calorie diets. The book, based on the results of that study which showed that all diets work – if you can stick to them, guided dieters to choose a way to eat that was based on their food preferences rather than food fads or the success of a friend. Only by choosing the foods you love can you develop a way of eating that can help you attain your desired weight and then stay there, forever.

Before attending medical school, Dr. Sanders was an Emmy award winning television producer. She lives in New Haven, CT.
