This month, we hear Dallapiccola's Songs of Imprisonment, which was the composer's direct response to Mussolini's race laws and was premiered on Brussels Radio weeks before the Nazi invasion of Belgium. The Cleveland Orchestra performs it on Dec. 2nd.

John Adam's The Chairman Dances comes from his 1985 opera Nixon in China, which is based on President Nixon's meeting with Mao Zedong in China in 1972. The music combines elements of 20th century neoclassicism, jazz, and the late romantic sounds of Wagner and Strauss, and will be performed by The Cleveland Orchestra on Nov. 25th.

Carl Orff's 1936 cantata was based on 24 medieval poems.  Today it is a staple of classical choral literature.  The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and soloists perform it this month.

The 50th Anniversary season of the Cleveland Orchestra continues with Arvo Pärt's Cantus In Memory of Benjamin Britten (9/16), which was composed as an elegy to mourn the December 1976 death of the English composer Benjamin Britten, whom Pärt greatly admired.
